Bandage dresses are made from a blend of rayon, nylon and spandex, a composite material similar to that used in foundation garments or shape wear. Quality bandage dresses must stretch for optimal comfort and be strong and durable to resist snagging as you put them on. They are designed to fit like a second skin, shaping your body with their stretch and thickness. In most dresses the material is woven into distinct layers that look a little like bandages, and this is where the name comes from.  So what are the three components of a bandage dress that give it these absolutely sought after qualities?

Rayon

Made from a cellulose derivative, ultimately coming from wood pulp or similar organic materials. Rayon is classified semi-synthetic as it comes from an organic source but does require processing to become a fabric.

Originally developed as a alternative to silk, it drapes well, feels as comfortable to wear as a natural product, is easy to dye and add color and blends easily with other fibers. Most importantly it has a high luster quality giving it a bright shine. All these aspects are perfect for the making of our bandage dresses and evening gowns.

Nylon

Unlike Rayon, Nylon is a completely synthetic fabric made from petroleum products. It is extremely widely used in a variety of products, far wider than the textile industry alone. For our bandage dresses Nylon adds strength and resistance to damage and is therefore a crucial component.

Spandex

Similarly to Nylon, Spandex is a completely synthetic material with a polymer base and is classified as polyurethane. Spandex is well known for its ability to stretch and can in fact stretch up to 6 times it's length and snap back to its original form.

Spandex adds the body hugging effect to our dresses, keeping your body tight and firm in a taught wrap. Interestingly Spandex can tire and lose its stretch over time, but fortunately this takes a while.

The Three Fabrics Combined

So in summary the dresses are approximately 90 percent rayon for its silk like qualities and bright luster, approximately 8 percent nylon for strength and durability and 2 percent spandex for stretch and figure hugging fit. The mix of Rayon, Nylon and Spandex results in a high quality, strong and durable dress. The woven fabric is a healthy thickness and is not see-through in any way allowing you to wear a tight fit with confidence. Additionally the stretch in the fabric, approximately 3 to 5 inches across your body is sufficient to keep you taut and in place without feeling uncomfortable. See our size chart for more detail.

Bandage dresses made from this composite fabric, especially using modern weaving methods, will also last a considerable amount of time and can put up with a significant amount of wear and tear. So you can be confident that your purchase will give you something you can wear time and time again.

How are bandage dresses made?

Manufactures of bandage dresses vary in size and production. Dressmakers can produce anywhere between 500 to over 40,000 dresses per month. These factories have two major departments or areas of production. Looms where the dress material is knitted and sewing where they are sewn together into final dress designs.

In between these processes there is the washing and drying of the newly knitted material and the cutting of the material into pattern based sizes. Afterwards dresses go through a finishing stage where they are inspected, loose ends removed and ironed, and finally labels attached.

Material is not generic to all dresses. Colors and material designs are knitted in quantity for a single batch of dresses at a time. As a result one cannot by generic bandage material as it is always made with a particular dress design in mind.
